On the 13th of March 2015, in celebration of International Women’s Day, hospital equipment worth over £14,000 was handed over to Seketoure Hospital.

Seketoure Hospital has capacity of 300 beds and its average daily influx is 400 to 500 patients.

The hospital is very highly subsidised by the government and there are serious shortages all kinds of equipment. When the appeal for help at this hospital was first launched it was observed that some beds had no mattresses, no bed sheets and no mosquito nets and were shared between several birthing women. Additionally there were not enough blood pressure machines or thermometers to serve the patients properly amongst many other shortcomings.

With the support of our donors, and many other contributors our partners in Tanzania were able to give many items to the hospital during a short ceremony attended by local people and the Mwanza Regional Commissioner Magessa Mulongo. Listed below are the items that were handed over.

  • 2 washing machines for washing blood stained bed sheets for women’s ward.

  • 15 blood pressure machines

  • 151 mattresses covered with rubber mackintosh

  • 200 mosquito nets

  • 400 bed sheets

  • 5 bathroom weighing scales

  • 15 good quality stethoscopes

  • 20 mercury thermometers

  • 20 digital thermometers

  • 1 foetus doppler

  • 2 X ray box lamps

  • 12 blood sugar measuring machines with 24 boxes of testing strips.

  • One motor cycle ambulance for village health centre

  • Complete construction of two public toilets

  • Two bathrooms and one store near mortuary area, mainly to be used by relatives of patients come to collect the bodies of their relatives.

The regional medical officer stated that this was the first time in the history of the hospital that such a gift had been received and that it would immediately change the standard of services provided.

Our hearty thanks go to the donors of this project; together with others a great result has been achieved. We also thank our partner in Tanzania for their continued hard work for those in need.
