2nd Quarter Report April - June 2021
STRIVING AGAINST STARVATION 2021
BCT’s annual Striving Against Starvation drive takes place during April to June, with the aim to provide food & medical aid to the poor in destitute areas.
Just £7 provides a family of four with a nutritious food parcel for one whole week. That’s just £1 a day for a substantial daily meal for a family.
We are so pleased to share that we have reached a total of £43, 418.03 so far!
A huge thank you to all who have donated to this very worthy cause, every amount no matter how small has gone a long way in supporting families and providing aid to those who would otherwise struggle to put food on the table.
We would like to share some photos below of the distribution that your support has facilitated.
GAZA EMERGENCY APPEAL
Gaza needs us all desperately, more now than ever.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing, around 72,000 people have been left homeless by the recent bombardment.
Many have been badly injured and left with some disability or impairment.
We are committed to supporting the delivery of aid for emergency food, medicines, housing and emotional wellbeing for the citizens of Gaza City, Khan Younis and Deir al Bala. We are working with our partners in predominantly supporting the deaf, blind and disabled citizens of this destructed city.
EYE CAMPS
Cataracts is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and BCT are committed to supporting our partners on the ground with their mobile eye camps.
Since March we have sponsored another 22 eye camps this quarter, which has resulted in just over 500 cataract surgeries.
This is a fantastic achievement and we are hugely grateful to our partners on the ground for their continued hard work in aiding the needy across rural areas of Kenya, Tanzania and India.
CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING CAMPS
Cervical cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and the fourth leading cause of death in women. It has been proven that cervical cancer screening programmes have improved the rate of detection and cure of cervical cancer.
With this in mind, BCT are very proud to be working with our partners at MEDEWELL, in supporting them as they embark on this new project in providing FREE cervical cancer screening for the underprivileged and financially constrained women in their catchment area of Dar es Salaam.
WATER WELLS
BCT has continued to commission a number of wells across destitute, arid areas of Tanzania, Kenya and Sindh despite the chaos caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.
Since March, another 3 wells have been commissioned and built. These wells will be serving a hostel with 600 students and a secondary school with over 1000 students. This brings our wells total to 28 this year!
YEMEN CRISIS
Beta Charitable Trust are continuing to support Yemen by pledging $12,000 per month for the distribution of baby milk, food parcels and Cholera vaccines.
Our Yemen Cholera Appeal has already helped vaccinate a portion of the close to a million affected Yemani people, the majority of whom are children. The Cholera outbreak has been described as the largest and fastest spreading in modern history, after WHO reported in October; 815,000 suspected cases and 2,156 deaths in Yemen.
2 fully equipped ambulances per month are being sent to the Hajjah area of Yemen, there are 3 refugee camps there that house around 7,000 internally displaced refugees. Tragically, around 90% of them are women and children.
BCT, together with our partners are aiming to medically evaluate and vaccinate 14,000 children in 2021, and your kind support is requested for this incredibly important campaign.
How you can get involved:
£12 - Pays for a Cholera Vaccine
£13 - Feeds a baby with formula for 6 weeks
£30 – Pays for a months family food parcel
£70 - Supports a widow and her orphans with food and other necessities for a month
The photos below show the amazing work our partners have achieved so far:
COVID 19 – INDIA EMERGENCY APPEAL
India is being decimated by a deadly new outbreak of Covid 19. The country is averaging over 330,000 new cases daily, the vaccine productions and rollout has been hampered by global export policy, and the healthcare system is collapsing under the weight of hospitalised cases.
The poor and vulnerable are suffering the most, with the highest infection and death rates, as well as mass unemployment.
BCT are working alongside ComfortAid International, and other partners on the ground to deliver vital relief.
West Bengal is one of the worst hit regions and have witnessed the highest surge of new Covid 19 cases in a month, by reporting 14,291 new cases. Kolkata alone accounted for 2970 cases.
We’re working with partners to deliver medical equipment, as well as financial aid and education grants to recently bereaved families.
