“Education is not preparation for life. education is life itself.”

John Dewey

It is estimated that over 46% of the Kenyan population live below the poverty line of $1 a day. As you can imagine, education does not take precedence when you are trying to keep your family alive on a pittance.

These challenges have forced children living in extreme poverty to be locked out of education.

Due to the distance, terrain, risk of attacks by wild animals, and other socioeconomic factors, most of them drop out within primary school. Therefore literacy amongst the community is very, very low. Beta Charitable Trust feels passionately about the crisis and our partners on the ground are continuing to work hard to build classrooms so the children no longer have to study with books on their laps, seated on the bare floor without furniture, books or stationery.

2021 Update

Construction had originally commenced in in September 2019. However heavy rains were experienced within the area and the spread of Covid-19 has caused a prolonged delay in construction. Despite this, we are pleased to share with you photos of Phase 1 of 2 new ECD classrooms currently being built at a secondary school in Chakama, Kenya.

When it all began

Once completed, these will join the two already recently completed ECD classrooms in Benzaro Village, just south of  the Galana River in Chackama, Kenya.

Thanks to these fully functional classrooms, many more young children now have the opportunity of an education in an encouraging environment without having to trek for miles.
