We are delighted to share a snippet of some of the on-going BCT projects that took place between July and September 2019. The below is not an exhaustive list of all current BCT activities and with your support, we continue to champion many long standing projects across education, healthcare and emergency relief.

Contributing Computers to Classrooms in Kenya

We are pleased to share with you the set of 30 computers which are now fully operational in the Computer Lab and Multipurpose Room in the Makinon Road Centre located in the Kinango Region of Kenya.

This has now facilitated the ability to use the multi functional room to host seminars and workshops. A Women’s Workshop has already taken place, whereby local women were invited to participate in various practical and theory sessions to enhance small food businesses. The course included Microfinance lectures; teaching essential skills and offering opportunities to diversify their businesses and adapt and learn new ways of maintaining good record keeping.

Pamoja Leo

Our partnership with Pamoja Leo in supporting vulnerable children in Tanga continues. BCT are pleased to share that we have recently donated £3,100 towards an outreach bus for the charity. Ed, co-founder and director of PL, made a 14 hour round trip from their base in Tanga to pick it up.

The new bus will enable;

  • Increased reach for child protection and welfare services in Tanga

  • Transportation for orphaned, abandoned, abused and neglected children who live in Tanga city to attend free early childhood education and other health and wellbeing services via Pamoja Leo

  • Transportation of the senior Girls Group; enabling them to carry out outreach and mentoring work for child protection, education and health topics

  • General school bus transportation; to bring children to school who otherwise would not be able to attend due to health implications and/or other disabilities

We are excited for the work to begin on the bus and look forward to sharing photos of the activities it will be facilitating soon!

Eye Camps

“Kindness is a gift the deaf can hear and the blind can see” –Mark Twain.
Between July and September we have supported another  21 Eye Camps. Working with our partners on the ground and  with the help of our generous supporters, we have been able to facilitate over 500 cataract surgeries. One camp in particular screened over 5000 patients and delivered 238 cataract and 25 other minor eye related surgeries. These life changing surgeries are vital in aiding the needy across rural areas of Kenya, Tanzania and India.

This brings our total thus far in 2019 to 65 eye camps and just over 2500 cataract operations!

Watch this space as we have another 20 eye camps scheduled for the last quarter of this year!

Yemen Crisis

BCT’s ongoing commitment stands at $84,000 per year which includes the following emergency relief;

  1. Beta Baby Milk Appeal - $10,000 worth of high-calorie, high-protein milk powder for infants suffering from malnutrition - 6 weeks of this treatment and the infant is already on the road to recovery.

  2. Cholera Vaccine Appeal -8,000 further cholera vaccinations have been administered in the beginning of July and the number of vaccinations administered is continuing to increase with various ongoing clinics run by our partners on the ground

  3. Food Aid - Food grains for those eligible, especially in remote locations that have little or no support from UN aid.

  4. Warm Blankets Appeal - In these colder months, warm blankets are distributed to those affected by the freezing temperatures

UK PROJECTS

BCT aids continuation of local Youth Group in Braintree, Essex

Every Wednesday, a local Mencap group meets to provide a social environment for young adults (16-30 years) with learning difficulties and special needs. This can include social trips with volunteers to the local bowling alley or other evenings to socialise with friends in a safe environment. Our friend Sara who is the Children’s Services Manager & Bridge Group Leader at Mencap, recently reached out to us as they were in danger of having to close the group due to lack of funding.

We are delighted to have donated £250 towards their Youth Group. This will enable them to continue running the session each week and provide a vital social arena which they so thoroughly enjoy.

Helping Sufra Re Stock

A recent crisis shortfall in stock meant that our friends at Sufra were unable to provide many provisions to the homeless or vulnerable walking through their door each night. BCT reached out during their time of need and donated £3,000 to help them get through the shortfall.

In addition to this, the staff at Beta Pharmaceuticals and Neon Diagnostics held an impromptu collection to bring in and donate non-perishable items. In just 3 days, a total of 54 kg of food was donated including, long life milk, pasta, rice, canned goods and toiletries.
